Practical guide

What to prepare for an IT strategy discussion

A useful strategy discussion starts with the business. These questions help establish the scope before choosing technology or committing to a programme.

What needs to change?

Describe the business objectives, service problems and deadlines. Separate existing operational issues from future growth or transformation requirements.

What constrains the options?

Bring together the budget position, supplier commitments, internal capacity and requirements that cannot be compromised.

What is already known?

Collect current architecture diagrams, service information, spending records and previous assessments. Identify where the information is incomplete.

What decision is needed next?

Agree whether the immediate output should be an assessment, options appraisal, investment roadmap or additional leadership support. Define who will use it and how decisions will be made.

This guide sets out a suggested preparation approach. The scope of a review or engagement should reflect your organisation’s circumstances.
