Practical guide

Questions to ask before an IT separation

A transaction timetable is a useful starting point. A delivery plan also needs to explain what the separating business will depend on at each stage.

Identify shared services

Document the services, infrastructure, suppliers, data and operational teams currently provided by the parent business. Confirm who owns each dependency.

Understand the transition window

Review the services covered by the transition arrangement, the exit conditions and the decisions that must be made before replacement services can be delivered.

Plan the operational destination

Identify who will support the new environment, which suppliers are needed and what documentation, training and access they will require.

Define readiness and cutover

Agree the evidence needed before each cutover, the responsibilities during the change and the fallback arrangements. Plan handover as part of delivery, rather than leaving it to the final stage.

This guide sets out a suggested preparation approach. The scope of a review or engagement should reflect your organisation’s circumstances.
